Global Life Expectancy Trends: 1960 to Today

Global average life expectancy has increased from 52 years in 1960 to over 73 years today. This 20-year gain represents one of humanity's greatest achievements.

The Biggest Gainers

East Asian countries saw the most dramatic improvements. South Korea went from 54 years in 1960 to 84 years today. China gained 25 years. These improvements came from economic development, better healthcare, and improved nutrition.

Where Progress Stalled

Sub-Saharan Africa saw minimal gains during the HIV/AIDS epidemic (1990-2005). Several countries in the region still have life expectancy below 60 years.

The COVID Impact

The pandemic caused the largest global decline in life expectancy since World War II. Recovery has been uneven. Explore data on our life expectancy indicator page.
